Yahoo! Finance Charts, Now in Flash

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the new Yahoo! Finance (Beta) including the new charts built in Flash. I think the finance team did a beautiful job on the new Flash charts. At the beginning of the project, Finance didn’t have any Flash developers. Rather than going down the hiring route for getting Flash expertise, they trained themselves and really knocked everyone’s socks off here.
You may also notice that the side panel of the charts is HTML-based. The finance group decided to go with a hybrid AJAX/Flash application. While I prefer Flash solutions overall for a variety of reasons, I think the overall feel is excellent. Without right clicking I wouldn’t know where one technology stopped and the other begins, just as it should be.
To check out some of the features of the charts, try comparing some different stock symbols, the graphing styles and most importantly the technical indicators. The technical indicators are very interesting modules that provide different perspectives on the displayed data. In addition though, they actually give information for novices such as me to know just what the heck I am looking at.

Sweet! I like how it automatically pulls up competitors. Though it’d be great if it automatically pulled in all the stocks that are set up in a My Yahoo portfolio.

I am psyched to see the Hybrid approach. I think the execution is flawless between the two technologies. Most importantly I am excited to see how the benefits of flash are being exploited…. aka when you maximize the screen the chart, being in Flash, enlarges as well.
From an analysis prospective the Competition comparison is a huge leap past the Flash Charting Google came out with.
Very Nicely Done!

I think the look is nice but it is pretty hard to understand how to interpret the charts. When using comparison charts, it is totally unclear if it is adjusted for dividends or capital distributions. If not, it is hard to see what use it is for comparing mutual funds, for instance, in particular if one is reinvesting dividends. It isn’t apples to apples unless that’s taken into account.

You said, “they actually give information for novices such as me to know just what the heck I am looking at”. I agree, it’s very helpful. I have a little knowledge of the market but lots to learn.
I looked but couldn’t find the same type of chart for the UK’s FTSE…is there one you know of?
Cheers

The Flash charts are much better than the ones that they previously used. I love the use of Flash in applications such as Yahoo Finance, as it really adds a new dimension to viewing the information.
