Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Vol. 1Birdman

If Harvey Birdman isn’t your favorite show already, it should be. This 15 Minute gem from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim is one of the most fast-paced, clever shows I’ve ever seen. AND! its animated in Flash! The show centers around The Hanna-Barbera character Birdman who is now a civil attorney taking cases for all of the old cartoon characters like the Jetsons, the Flintstones, Scooby Doo, speed buggy, and lots of others.

This show has to be 15 minutes long because if Gary Cole and Stephen Colbert were allowed to go on for 30 minutes, I would probably die from not being able to breathe while laughing so hard. My favorite moment is still when Black Vulcan from super friends is talking about minority super heroes and how Black Vulcan was Aquaman’s suggestion. BV’s response: “Yeah? well maybe you should be called White Fish.”

But anyways, FLASH. :) I had heard a while before that Harvey Birdman was animated in Flash, but when I got the DVDs it was very cool to hear the commentary tracks where they were talking about switching from traditional animation to Flash. They talked about cost, creativity, quality, and control. Who doesn’t want all of that?? If you compare the “Bannon Custody Battle” episode with “SPF” (the first Flash episode), you’ll see that the difference is night and day. I also have to say that the flash animation on this show is fantastic. Only rarely do you see any telltales that the art is Flash. In other cartoons like WB’s Mucha Lucha, the animation is much more clearly Flash (pretty visible optimization).

If you have never seen the show before, try a video search and see if you can find a nefarious person who has put an episode or two online.
