Mike Chambers posted about Tim Bray’s post about how he feels Adobe is buying Macromedia for DreamWeaver and will eliminate Flash as a “distraction.” At first I was angry (it raised my Flash hackles), then I was left puzzled. It was the most mystifying comment I’ve read among a lot of comments that are full of fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD).
Then it became clear. Tim Bray is the Director of Web technology for Sun. Sun has whistled past the graveyard as Java applets have been displaced from almost all their former niches on the Internet. Sure they are bitter; yes, they really don’t get it, but as a Flash developer, I’ve been very pleased by their lack of attention. Sun could only dream of a day when Adobe guts Flash so that we might return to those great days of clunky Java applets that never actually fulfilled their purpose within the development community.
Now the question is, can we count on Sun staying in their blissful state while Flash also displaces J2ME as a front-end solution for mobile devices? I would guess yes. Oh wait, are you a Sun person reading this? If so, here is some new sheet music. go learn to whistle this for just a while longer. We’re almost done
