Yahoo! relaunches Chess in Flash 7

Yahoo! Chess

Yahoo! Chess (login required) has been re-designed, re-coded and as of late last week, re-launched in Flash 7. Although Yahoo! has had several single player Flash games, this is the first of our core multiplayer games to be ported from Java to Flash.

As you can see, the design has been completely overhauled as well as the experience of the combined lobby gameplay area. In addition to the design and technical benefits, Flash provides Yahoo! Games with the ability to make a game once and deploy it to all platforms, a serious problem for a lot of the java games out there.

If you are a chess geek, give it a try and let me know what you think.

  1. Hi Justin,
Nice work! May I ask how you handled the server side? Is it Flash Media Server 2.0? if so what subscription plan? or did you keep the server side in java and just convert the clients to receive updates?
Id be really interested to hear whatever you could share about how you set up the multiplayer side of things including the lobby.
    cheers,
    glyn

  2. I’d like the ability to change the style of the board… I love the ‘figurine’ look of Chessmaster on the PS2 — looks like the 2d chess diagrams in chess books…

It would be cool to be able to upload your own custom made chess skins / sets, or to load them from your own HD. Maybe I want to use images of me & my friends for pieces.. Custrom board, etc. You coudl also have a check box option to “use opponents set” or something.. Or even, browse their skins, and save the ones you like.. another way to customize.

  3. On the Flash chess version I can get to the point where I can choose a room/table but then I get the “old version of the clinet” and it’s not a cache issues. Same deal on IE6 and FF1.5.0.2. Cleared caches on both and rebooted.
I’m behind a corporate firewall. Could that be it?

  4. New version sucks. I keep getting that silly ambiguous error message which tells me that there is a version conflict, when there clearly isn’t, as this is the first time I visited the site, and even then I cleared the cache to no avail. I’m also behind a corporate firewall, but have full access to the web…..

  5. flash is more of cpu burden than java and java being a complete language is more powerful you do the math could this be cause microsoft and java split paths i notice why i got to get a jre on windows. java>flash

  6. hey guys any solutions??? for the problem mentioned above by others again and again.

I can’t join it either. Whenever I click to join a server it gives me the stupid error of VERSION CONFLICT. I tried everything clearing the cache, disabling it, restarting the computer and the browser, updating flash player, etc. I m not behind any firewall and still can’t play.

  7. I can’t run the new Yahoo Chess as of Sunday 10PM, Nov 25, 2007. I played their “improved” chess just last week and it worked fine. This really new version tells me “You have an old version of the client in your cache” which is complete nonsense. I reset Safari completely and cleared everything, restarted, and still same error. I’m on a Mac with 1 gig memory and running OS X 10.4.11

  8. i can’t do yahoo chess – old or new version. cache issue isn’t it. i was successful earlier today. now nothing. must be a bug in the new version.

  9. ChessCube is a new chess website that also leverages Adobe Flash/Flex/Air. We have really tried to stretch the boundary of what is possible for chess on a web page, with interactive chess video-lectures.

  10. Dont work!
You have an old version of the client in ….
im have proxy server 192.168.1.99:8080 and work mashine 192.168.1.23

    BAD!
    very bad work!

  11. Hey nice site you have. Anyways I just thought I’d chat about some new chess software I found lately. Its called chess analysis pro 7000. Its very good in analyzing your chess games for blunders. It also trackes your chess ratings. I liked the little book that came with it too. Yes I’d recommend this item.
